Lady Gaga's "Venus" - Song Review

Once-official-lead-single-turned-promotional-offering "Venus" has finally crashed down to Earth in all its campy, space odyssey goodness after two snippet releases from the ARTPOP-aficionado herself, Lady Gaga. Though it may have been replaced, cast to the side, by the R. Kelly-assisted, bit more radio friendly, "Do What U Want", the new track still has enough punch to please critics and fans. I mean, it is already sitting at the runner-up position on iTunes!

Coming hot on the heels of her latest radio hit "Applause" and aforementioned "DWUW", "Venus" is the crazy, messy in a good way, kind of track we have come to expect from our beloved pop star - think "Judas", but trapped in the depth of outer space instead of the pits of hell. Clearly inspired by art, especially The Birth of Venus, for her upcoming album, Lady Gaga gives us a wide range of vocals performances across a song with four hooks, a killer chorus, and a complete reference of the solar system. The whole experience may just be too much for some simple, mortal ears.

While the snippets may have been confusing once first released, the entire track comes together with incredibly dance production from Mother Monster herself. David Bowie-influenced vocals and yet another glorious pop hook allow "Venus" to become something experimental, pleasantly surprising and totally ARTPOP. "When you touch me I die, just a little inside, I wonder if this could be love," the "LoveGame" songstress sings (watch "LoveGame", so close to 100,000,000 views) as she confesses her devoted love to the gods and the stars. In all its weirdness, the explosive new release is pulled together only if a way that Gaga truly can.

"Venus" is a fun, not-so-serious listen, but I can understand why its official single release was put on hold, probably indefinitely. Lines such as "Uranus, don't you know my ass is famous?" are part of its campy nature, but critics and non-Gaga believers may be turned off by their slight dose of immaturity. "Do What U Want" is, in all honesty, the better choice. It's radio-friendly qualities, perfect vocals, crossover potential and appearance by R. Kelly could create a winning formula for Gaga's biggest single since "Born This Way". "Venus", on the other hand, is a track, done with a hint of love, that the artist's true fans will adore and cherish for years to come, but maybe that's how it should stay for now.

Both new releases are great additions to Lady Gaga's already long, diverse list of hits. "Venus" is the artist's baby and we can all expect a colorful music video in the near future. But let's just enjoy and stop comparing the two. Stop the drama, start the music! Listen below and take a listen to the new promo song in its live premiere on The X Factor UK last night. Soooooo good!
