Australia Trip 2012 Part XIII - Sorell Fruit Farm, Tasmania

Tasmania's cool climate gives extra flavour to its berry fruits and cherries. On our way to Port Arthur from Hobart, we stopped by and spent a couple hours at Sorell Fruit Farm which offers a wide variety of these temperate fruits.

The four hectare orchard contains 15 different fruit types with emphasis on berry fruits and sweet cherries. The kids got to pick and taste their favorite cherries and berries directly from the trees. I have forgotten the entry charges with a punnet (think it was about AUD$10 per pax depending on size of punnet) to the orchard but definitely not as cheap as the same bucket of fruits you could buy from the supermarket. But what the farm offered was a fruit experience and the opportunity to pick many varieties of fresh, tree-ripened fruit grown with the minimum use of pesticides. A very rare and educational experience for the city kids from Singapore.

While the 6 kids and KH were happily running around the orchard under the bright blue sky picking and tasting the fruits. The rest of the adults found a cozy corner in the Café sipping coffee and trying out their homemade scones. We had both the sweet and savoury scones. Both were good but I still prefer the sweet version served with cream and the freshly-picked berries from the orchard.

The shop also sells a wide variety of local liqueurs, jams, honeys, vinaigrettes and pickles for you to bring home.
